UFC Welterweight star Nate Diaz might soon be parting ways with the UFC, as it has been reported that the Stock superstar’s current contract with the promotion has an expiration date before November, and it will terminate whether or not Diaz gets booked for his final Octagon fight.
The relationship between Nate Diaz and the UFC has been on the decline. The former UFC Lightweight contender, who is still a top fan favorite in the sport, has only one fight left on his current contract and last month, accused the UFC for repeatedly shutting the door on him and openly called for a fight with “anyone”, if not parting ways with the promotion as he accused the UFC of being held as a “hostage”.
UFC prez Dana White, however, has shut down the claims from Diaz. During the interview after UFC on ABC 3 last weekend, White denied the “hostage” allegation from Diaz and also claimed that he has indeed made attempts to secure the 37-year-old a sensible bout.
“We can’t hold guys hostage,” said the UFC prez, “It’s not possible. I owe you three fights a year. If I don’t fight you three times a year, I have to pay you. How can I hold him hostage?” [H/T MMA Junkie]
Diaz issued his response on Twitter.
Dana said Francis Ngannou was injured and couldn’t fight right now
Idk why he was so confused in interview.
And in the last 9 months I been offered 0 fights and I asked for 5 legitimate opponents ..
Thanks u for the kind words can I go now 👊🏼— Nathan Diaz (@NateDiaz209) July 17, 2022
ESPN reports Nate Diaz’s UFC contract expiring in the fall, Ariel Helwani quotes Oct 19
In the meantime, Marc Raimondi of ESPN reported that Diaz’s one-fight-to-go contract with the UFC has its expiration date this year. While Raimondi couldn’t specify the exact date when the contract expires, he referred to sources claiming its sometime in the fall and before November.
On Monday, Ariel Helwani claimed on The MMA Hour that the expiration date is October 19th.
“He keeps going back to this whole thing, three fights. ‘We have to offer him three fights.’ They haven’t offered him a single fight this year. That’s a shoot, that’s a fact, and he keeps saying ‘We have to offer him.’ So when are you going to do this? By the way, they have until October 19 for him to fight … There’s a term on every contract. If I signed with UFC today, the contract states I’m signing for eight fights or four years, and there’s an end to that contract. Every contract has an end date,” said Helwani. [H/T Sportskeeda]
