American University student Nathan Valencia dies four days after participating in a charity boxing match

UNLV student Nathan Valencia died four days after participating in a charity boxing match

In a very unfortunate event 20-year-old, Nathan Valencia who was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity participated in a charity boxing event and just four days later he died. Nathan Valencia fell down after the fight and was taken to the nearby hospital where he passed away four days later of his boxing match. He died on Nov. 23 of brain injuries four days after the match, lawyers for his family said. The case has gone into investigation. The Nevada State Athletic Commission published on Monday that it had begun the investigation into an amateur boxing event hosted by a fraternity at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

According to the reports, a boxing official told the media that the referee did not appear professional, allowing the fight to continue even though Nathan Valencia was taking continuous shots to his head and the fight could have been stopped much earlier.

Joe Castro who is a longtime friend of Valencia’s said he witnessed the boxing match at the Sahara Event Center in Las Vegas and described the event as an underground fight club. Castro said Nathan Valencia had no boxing experience but decided to get in the ring anyway. At some point during the fight, he collapsed and the fight was stopped.

“I saw no medical, no doctors, nothing,” Castro said, backing up the family’s claims that safety precautions were tragically overlooked.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said on Monday that it had investigated the licensing of the charity boxing event at which Nathan Valencia had been “critically injured” and determined that “there is no information that there is any criminality on the part of the venue” and that the death was not considered criminal.

In its statement on Monday evening, the Athletic Commission said that it would share further details of its investigation “as they become available.”

In a statement issued through the lawyers of Nathan Valencia’s family, they expressed heartbreak over his death and announced their intention to investigate how the university and its Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter allowed the boxing match to be held under unprofessional supervision.

“College students should not be placed in a situation where they are pitted against each other for combat,” the statement said. “We will leave no stone unturned to determine how a 20-year-old ended up in a school-sanctioned amateur fight that cost him his life.”

UNLV’s president sent the following message out to the entire campus today via email:

“Dear Campus,

“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness I share that a member of the UNLV family is no longer with us.”

“Nathan Tyler Valencia has passed away following a tragic incident a week ago. Nathan was a junior at UNLV and had participated in Kappa Sigma Fraternity’s “Fight Night,” an off-campus event intended to raise money. Soon after his fight, Nathan collapsed and was taken to a hospital. We are shocked and heartbroken as we mourn the loss of one of our own. Coping with the loss of life is always difficult, especially under these circumstances. UNLV is committing all available resources to review the incident and determine how off-campus events like these can be as safe as possible.”
