UFC 228 is in the books and it will be remembered for a lot of things. One among this will be the last-minute drama involving Nicco Montano. Montano pulled out from her title defence against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 228 just a day before the event.

Nicco Montano has released a statement regarding the UFC 228 controversy

The fight was eventually cancelled and though it was due to medical issues, Montano’s Flyweight championship was taken away from her.

Now, Montano has come out with a lengthy statement on her Instagram page. She noted that the UFC title stripping was uncalled for and said that many other fighters were not punished for such issues.

The former champion also gave an idea about her condition. She revealed that her kidneys had shut down and that she was just minutes away from a cardiac arrest.

Montano then went on to take multiple shots at Shevchenko by tagging her as ‘disrespectful’, ‘obsessed’, and ‘jealous’.

When concluding, Montano guaranteed that she will come back and take her title back.

The Build-up and UFC 228

The UFC 228 fight was supposed to be the first title defence of Montano. She won the title defeating Roxanne Modafferi back in December 2017 and is yet to fight after that. Currently 4-2 in her career, Montano had some heated exchanges with Shevchenko prior to the pay-per-view.

As for Shevchenko, she moved to Flyweight after her loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 215. She then defeated Priscila Cachoeira at UFC Fight Night 115 to earn her Flyweight title shot. UFC subsequently booked the Montano – Shevchenko fight as the co-main event of UFC 228 but was forced to cancel the fight and strip Montano as mentioned earlier.

UFC has also announced that number one contender Shevchenko will now fight an opponent later this year to determine the new champion.
