UFC superstar Nick Diaz returns to the octagon against Robbie Lawler at UFC 266 and the bout will be UFC’s second non-title, non-main event five-rounder match.

Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler targeted for UFC 266 in September

A few weeks back UFC president Dana White revealed that Stockton’s very own gangster Nick Diaz will be fighting soon. Right after the news speculated that his opponent will be Robbie Lawler. The duo had previously fought at UFC 47 in 2004. Now Dana White has confirmed that the promotion has now finalized this deal for UFC 266 in September.

Dana White additionally revealed to Yahoo! Sports that the fight will be a five-round contest, making it the second non-title, non-main event fight in UFC history to be scheduled for 25 minutes after Nate Diaz vs. Leon Edwards first broke the barrier at UFC 263 in June. UFC 266 takes place on Sept. 25 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.

This rematch between two of the all-time best welterweights in the world is a match that took 17 years to be remade. The duo fought way back in 2004. Nick was a huge underdog going into their first fight and Robbie was already this huge prospect of the sport. Nick went and showed the world that he was no one to joke around. The moment the fight started Nick went on with his trash-talking which frustrated Robbie and made him fight angry. They both engaged in a complete firefight but Nick waited for his moment and landed a perfect hook that sent Robbie to face first in the Canvas. The referee jumped in and stopped that fight.

Since their first fight, the duo had a completely different path. Diaz becomes the Strikeforce welterweight champion whereas Robbie Lawler became the UFC welterweight champion.

Robbie Lawler became the UFC welterweight champion by defeating Johny Hendricks and then defended his belt twice before losing it to Tyron Woodley. Robbie Lawler hasn’t won a fight since his win against Donald Cerrone. He is riding on a four-fight losing streak. In his last fight, he dropped a unanimous decision to Neil Magny. This fight against Nick Diaz will be a huge opportunity for him as he will get a chance to avenge his loss.

Nick Diaz’s longest winning streak of 11- fights was from 2008 to 2011 when he went on to become the Strikeforce welterweight champion. He is 1-2-1 in his last four UFC fights with his last win against BJ Penn. In his last UFC fight, he fought the middleweight great Anderson Silva but he lost the fight via decision which was later turned into a no-contest after Silva tested positive for drostanolone and androsterone and Diaz tested for marijuana.
