UFC welterweight Niko Price had his temporary suspension extended after he also tested positive for marijuana following his three-round battle with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on Sept. 19. Price will likely receive his sanction from the Nevada Commission at their next meeting in December. Niko Price has also defeated James Vick previously.

UFC newcomer Kevin Croom made his octagon debut on one day’s notice and pulled off an improbable submission win in just 31 seconds, but that didn’t save him from a suspension handed down by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

On Wednesday during the commission’s monthly meeting, Croom was suspended for almost 5 months after he tested positive for marijuana following a win over Roosevelt Roberts on Sept. 12. As part of an adjudication agreement with the state, Croom will be eligible to return to action after Jan. 26, 2021 and he will have to pay an $1,800 fine as well as $145.36 in attorney’s fees.

In addition to the two fighters on the UFC roster who received sanctions from the commission, a pair of Dana White Contender Series veterans are also facing punishment following positive drug tests.

Jose Flores, who lost to Jordan Leavitt in the debut edition of the Contender Series earlier this year, was suspended four and a half months after he tested positive for marijuana. He will also have to pay a $750 fine along with $145.36 in attorney fees. Flores will be eligible to compete again after Dec. 4.

Various UFC fighters including Niko Price suspended for marijuana usage

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has now placed Niko Price, Kevin Croom, and Contender Series fighter Jose Flores under suspension according to reports from John Morgan. Which, of course, isn’t rare in the MMA space.  As constraints on cannabis continue to decline, its usage is only increasing among mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters.

According to a poll conducted by The Athletic that surveyed 170 fighters, nearly half — or 49.5 percent — revealed they use marijuana for rehabilitation or recreational purposes. In addition, 4.6 percent used marijuana in the past but don’t anymore, while 76.5 percent of fighters also revealed they have used cannabidiol (CBD). However, there are still marijuana guidelines that fighters must follow.

One more suspension was handed down to heavyweight prospect Chad Johnson, who lost his Contender Series bout on Aug. 18. He tested positive for a banned amphetamine, which will result in a nine-month suspension and a $750 fine.

Johnson’s suspension will run until May 18, 2021.
