On June 10 at UFC 289, Amanda Nunes will be defending her Bantamweight title against Irene Aldana in Vancouver Canada, UCF’s first fight in The Great North since 2019.

Nunes, also known as the Lioness will enter the fight with a 22-5 career record including 13 wins by knockout and four wins by submission in her caterer. This will be her first title defense since winning the UFC Women’s Bantamweight title last July against Julianna Pena in a unanimous decision at UFC 277. That win came seven months after losing the same title to Pena in December of 2021 during UFC 269.

Prior to her loss at UFC 269, Nunes had won 12 straight fights from March 21, 2015 through March 6, 2021. In nine of those 12 straight wins, she also successfully defended either the UCF Women’s Bantamweight Championship or UFC Women’s Featherweight title. Nunes still holds the Featherweight title with a 1,600+ title reign. She last defended the title at UFC 259 against Megan Anderson on March 6, 2021.

Aldana, on the other hand, will enter with a 14-6 record in her career with eight of her wins coming by way of knockout. She enters her fight against Nunes with wins in each of her last two fights though she has not fought since September of last year. In that fight at UFC 279, Aldana defeated Macy Chiasson in technical knockout fashion. She also defeated Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 264 with a technical knockout. Her last loss came against Holly Holm on October 4, 2020, in a unanimous decision.

Currently, Nunes is considered a considerable favorite in the matchup with the odds across the industry ranging from -300 to -400. Aldana’s underdog odds range from +220 to as high as +285. The fight between Nunes and Aldana is one of the most anticipated events based on the best sports betting apps in Arizona.

Notably, the fight between Nunes and Aldana was originally supposed to be a third match between Nunes and Julianna Pena. However, Pena suffered broken ribs in early May, meaning the UFC had to pivot, and next up on the board was Aldana. Recently in an interview with Joe Anik of ESPN MMA, Nunes even called Aldana “more dangerous” than Pena, noting that Aldana is a complete fighter from both a technical and power side of things.

This year has already seen six title changes within the UFC including Mexican flyweight Alexa Grasso winning the Flyweight women’s title at  UFC 285. On the men’s side, Jamahal Hill (light heavyweight), Brandon Moreno (flyweight), Yair Rodrigeuz (featherweight), Jon Jones (heavyweight), and Israel Adesanya (middleweight) have all won titles this year as well. If Aldana can upset Nunes at UFC 289, she would be the fourth Mexican fighter this year to win a title joining Grasso, Moreno, and Rodriguez.

The June 10 pay-per-view will start at 10:00 p.m. ET, 7:00 p.m. PT and will be shown on ESPN+ via their PPV options. Other matches on the fight card include Charles Oliveira vs Beneil Dariush, Mike Malott vs Adam Fugitt, Dan Ige vs Nate Landwehr, and Marc-Andre Barriault vs Eryk Anders.

The preliminaries that begin at 8:00 p.m. ET on June 10 that can be viewed on ESPN or ESPN+ include Matt Schnell vs David Dvorak, Khalil Rountree Jr vs Chris Daukaus, Nassourdine Imavov vs Chris Curtis, Hakeem Dawodo vs Lucas Almeida. While the early prelims are; Aiemann Zahabi vs Aoriqileng, Kyle Nelson vs Blake Bilder, Diana Belbita vs Maria Oliveria, and Miranda Maverick vs Jasmine Jasudavicius.

While it is not the most star-studded pay-per-view card that we have seen from the UFC in recent memory, it is still a very strong card with several highly intriguing matchups. Of course with the return to Canada, it also features numerous Canadian fighters with six set to fight on June 10. Those fighting in their home country include Mike Malott, Marc-Andre Barriault, Hakeem Dawodu, Aliemann Zahabi, Kyle Nelson, and Jasmine Jasudavicius.
