Instead of solely defending his title in the boxing ring, he joined Kyiv’s Territorial Defense Battalion in 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow soldiers on the frontline. This move was driven by a deep sense of duty to his homeland and a desire to make a meaningful impact beyond sports.
During that time Usyk gave CNN an interview from a bunker.
“If they will want to take my life, or the lives of my close ones, I will have to do it,” Usyk told CNN. “But I don’t want that. I don’t want to shoot, I don’t want to kill anybody, but if they will be killing me, I will have no choice.”
Oleksandr Usyk’s journey from the boxing ring to the battlefield was both inspiring and poignant. As he stepped away from training and donned military fatigues, he became a symbol of resilience and unity for his country. Alongside other fighters, including fellow boxer Vasiliy Lomachenko and the Klitschko brothers, Usyk fought not only for victory in the ring but also for Ukraine’s survival.

Oleksandr Usyk’s Legendary Comeback
He then went on to create a fairytale by defeating Tyson Fury to become the undisputed champion.
The 12-round battle was a display of heart, skill, and determination. Usyk’s near stoppage of Fury in the ninth round added drama, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. Referee decisions and conspiracy theories fueled post-fight discussions.
In the end, the judges rendered a split decision: 115-112 in favor of Usyk, 114-113 in favor of Fury, and another 114-113 in favor of Usyk. Oleksandr Usyk emerged victorious, etching his name alongside legends like Ali, Tyson, and Holyfield.
His victory transcended boxing—it symbolized resilience, courage, and the pursuit of greatness. As the undisputed king, Usyk stands tall—both in the ring and in history.
