Phoe Thaw injured by a homemade bomb

Myanmar has been in crisis since past February due the disputes between the civilians and the military authorities. On February 1, the Southeast Asian country’s military referred as the Tatmadaw took over the nation by detaining the elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint, and several other members of the country’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD). Protests have been taking place daily and soldiers have responded with lethal force.

According to the military groups, Thaw was injured when a homemade bomb he had built exploded at his gym in Yangon on Wednesday night. However, some disputed this version of events citing a source who told them that ‘the home-made bomb had been left at the gym car park by a policeman posing as a civilian’. Three bombs are reported to have gone off in the Kandawgyi Park area and Thaw appears to have been in the vicinity of one of the blasts. Many people are also saying that he was targeted by the Tatmadaw because he was a famous person in his town and he was also standing up against injustice.

His younger brother, Kaung Si Thu, is a professional footballer who has played for the Myanmar national team. According to reports, he was also arrested by the military this Friday. According to sources on the ground in Yangon, the Tatmadaw subsequently arrested Phoe Thaw from the hospital despite his still being in serious condition.

The clash between the people and the military is getting very serious in Myanmar. There are daily protests which are taking place in the country’s capital and elsewhere. At least 766 protestors and bystanders have been killed by the police or military and over 3,000 people have been detained. Many people like Thaw who are trying to stand for their rights are suffering.
