In the main event of ONE Fight Night 24 on Friday, August 2, Jarred Brooks defeated Gustavo Balart to win the ONE Interim Strawweight World Title and guarantee another shot at the current divisional king, Joshua Pacio.
The contest at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, was a short affair, as Brooks decimated #3-ranked Balart inside the first round.
As soon as the bell rang, the two athletes collided at the center of the ring, and it took just a few seconds for “The Monkey God” to drag Balart to the canvas, clinging to his back and applying pressure, which resulted in a rear-naked choke.
Balart defended well for a long time, but at the 4:39 mark of round one, he was forced to tap by the squeeze.
Brooks improved his professional record to 21-3 with the 11th finish of his career and will face Pacio in the near future for the World Title unification fight.
In the co-main event, Brazilian superstar Mayssa Bastos secured a thrilling win over Danielle Kelly to claim the ONE Women’s Atomweight Submission Grappling World Title.
Bastos started the bout with her open guard, attacking Kelly’s back multiple times. The American star evaded the attacks and showed aggression.
At the midpoint of the match, Kelly scored a catch for a deep inside heel hook. With minutes remaining on the clock, Bastos responded with a dangerous submission attempt where she nearly secured a belly-down heel hook.
Bastos was unanimously adjudged the winner, as she not only became the new ONE Women’s Atomweight Submission Grappling World Champion but also the first-ever Brazilian athlete to claim a ONE Submission Grappling World Title.
Bastos was awarded a US$50,000 performance bonus as she now boasts an overall career record of 119-12.
