Former ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nong-O Hama wanted a decisive outcome in this rematch against #3-ranked flyweight contender Kongthoranee Sor Sommai, and he got just that.
And as expected, he certainly had to thread the needle to get there.
The Thai striking legend looked totally energized in his second outing back in flyweight as he scored a convincing unanimous decision win over his compatriot in the main event of ONE Fight Night 31 inside Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand last May 3.
Nong-O came out of the gates firing in the first round, taking the center of the ring and pushing Kongthoranee back into the ropes, mixing leg kicks with boxing combinations that had his opponent rattled.
But Nong-O’s ultimate test came in the second round.
Knowing he was behind the scorecards after that sizzling start for the former eight-time ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion, Kongthoranee upped the aggression.
The #3-ranked flyweight contender started moving forward more and was rewarded after a booming left straight that rocked Nong-O off his socks and had the superstar scrambling for footing.
But the toughness and grit of Nong-O was on full display as not only did he survive from Kongthoranee’s onslaught, he was the one pushing the aggression by the end of the second round — even connecting on a few clean uppercuts that halted Kongthoranee’s momentum.
That momentum was all lost in the final round as Nong-O targeted Kongthoranee’s body, landing one body kick after another to erase all doubts and claim the unanimous decision win after nine minutes of red-hot Muay Thai action.
The win pushed Nong-O to 267-58 for his career, while earning a US$50,000 performance bonus in the process.
In the co-main event, Tye Ruotolo put a decisive end on his rivalry with Dante Leon to retain the ONE Welterweight Submission Grappling World Title in a nice back-and-forth between two grappling greats.
