Alistair Overeem to make GLORY kickboxing debut against Rico Verhoeven on Oct 23

Alistair Overeem, the former UFC Heavyweight fighter inked a deal with international kickboxing promotion GLORY back in June and is set to make his promotional debut on 23rd October against the promotional heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven.

Following his departure from the Octagon after his final UFC appearance Alexander Volkov at UFC Fight Night 184 on 6th February when he lost via a 2nd round TKO, Alistair Overeem signed a multi year, multi fight deal with GLORY.

Now, the former UFC heavyweight title contender is set to return to his kickboxing roots as on the Monday edition of The MMA Hour, the Dutchman announced to Ariel Helwani that he will be facing Verhoeven headliner event of GLORY: Collision 3.

“This is a prestige fight, of course, but he doesn’t hold the title. So of course I’m gonna go as high as possible and that’s Rico. It’s gonna be big. The circle will be complete,” Overeem said on The MMA Hour. (H/T MMA Mania)

Alistair Overeem to face GLORY heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven

One of the top fighters in GLORY, Rico Verhoeven (21-1-0, 8 KO) has remained unbeaten in the past six years and is on a 14 fight win streak. The current heavyweight champion was last seen in action back in January, winning the GLORY 77 Heavyweight Tournament.

“I want to congratulate Alistair on getting the fight,” Verhoeven applauded his compatriot, “I think this is the fight everybody wants but not everybody gets. I think it’s a huge deal for him but for me it’s just another day at the office, so it’s gonna be fun.” (H/T MMA Mania)

Prior to his prominence in the world of mixed martial arts, Overeem kicked off his combat sports career at the age of 17 with kickboxing and made his professional kickboxing debut in a K-1 rules fight in November 1997.

Later, “The Demolition Man” became a dominant force in the Hong Kong based promotion, and won the K-1 World Grand Prix Champion. He currently holds a 10-4 kickboxing record and made his last kickboxing appearance on 11th December 2010, defeating Peter Aerts via 1st round TKO at the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 Final which took place in Tokyo.

GLORY: Collision 3 will take place at the GelreDome in Arnhem, the Netherlands on 23rd October and will be streamed on internet PPV via GLORYFights.com.
