There have been a handful of mixed martial artists who have switched to boxing in recent years, and it seems like UFC middleweight star Paulo Costa will be another one following the trend.

Paulo Costa has been unsatisfied with his current UFC contract

‘Borrachinha’, who is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Luke Rockhold at UFC 278 back in August, is nearing free agency, with just one fight left on his current contract with the promotion.

While he’s technically still under contract with the UFC, Costa has been unhappy with his current deal and back in August, just days after the Rockhold fight, revealed that he was eager to try out becoming a free agent.

“I have one more, I didn’t know, I thought this was the last one but I have one more. I’m looking forward to being a free agent for sure, I will not lie to you. I’d (thought) this was the last one of this contract,” Paulo Costa said on The MMA Hour back in August.

“I really believe it’s not just for me, it’s for everybody. I’m on a high, high level, fighting the best of this division and my contract is too old. When I fought Marvin Vettori, I got $35,000. $35,000. For this one was a couple more, a couple more, I got the win bonus, and because when I fought Marvin Vettori, I got a 20% reduction… I need to talk with them and see. I’m not rushing up to see, but we need to see, we need to figure it out. I’m not happy with the current contract, of course.”

As of now, the Brazilian is in the works to take on former 185-pound champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 284 in Australia in February next year, and a win may land him a rematch with the reigning divisional champion Israel Adesanya.

But as it seems, Costa might have already made up his mind to switch the Octagon with the squared circle.

In a recent tweet, Costa stated that his “miserable” UFC contract will be coming to an end in the next few months, after which he wants to step into boxing.

My miserable contract with the UFC was up in a few short months. will expire in time. A new #boxer is coming to town!” he tweeted.
