Dana White, the UFC President, recently addressed the decision to revert to the old gloves ahead of UFC 309. The new gloves, which were introduced to minimize eye pokes, received significant criticism from fighters and fans alike.
Dana White opens up on the new UFC gloves
During the UFC 309 press conference, Dana White explained, “We originally created these gloves to stop eye pokes and we had good intentions with them. They didn’t work out. People weren’t happy with them. So, I actually made the decision, called our Chief Operating Officer Lawrence [Epstein], and said, ‘I’m switching the gloves, I want the old gloves back.’”
The new gloves featured seams on the palm side of the hand, new padding, and a reduction in weight, but fighters found them uncomfortable and not effective in reducing eye pokes. Notably, Jon Jones voiced his preference for the old gloves, describing the new ones as small and uncomfortable.
White confirmed that the switch back to the old gloves is not just for this event but will be permanent. He added, “The new gloves are now the old gloves.”
