Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos feels that he still might get a chance to fight former two-division champion Conor Mcgregor. Conor and Rafael were scheduled to fight each other a long time back at UFC 197. Conor was the featherweight champion challenging then lightweight champion Dos Anjos. But unfortunately, the fight got scrapped as Rafael had a foot injury and was replaced by Nate Diaz who then went on to defeat Conor Mcgregor at UFC 196. Now five years later since they were the first scheduled to fight Dos Anjos still believes that he is on Conor’s radar.’
Speaking to AG Fight, Rafael dos Anjos explained that when Conor returns from his injury which he faced in his last fight against Dustin Poirier, he will want to have a fight against Dos Anjos.
“I think he comes back. A lesion that is bone, it was nothing to articulate. The ‘Sledgehammer’ (Thiago Santos) blew the ligaments in his knee and went back to fighting. It’s just like when I broke my jaw. It’s bone to bone, glued, it’s gone. It was a bad injury, but it will be stronger than it was. I believe he’ll come back, do some fights and I’m a guy who should be on his radar. He’s a guy who picks his fights and decides who he’s going to fight. There was a disagreement at the weigh-in with me, he came walking behind me to slap me on the head, or do something, but I saw it out of the corner of my eye and stood up, there was stress,” dos Anjos said.
Conor in his last interview revealed that his recovery process is going really well and he’ll return to the octagon soon. In his last fight, he faced his arch-rival, Dustin Poirier, in their trilogy fight at UFC 264. The fight wasn’t going well for Conor but by the end of the first round things got worse as he broke his foot and the fight was called off declaring Dustin the winner by TKO. Rafael Dos Anjos served as an emergency replacement for UFC 264 if Conor or Dustin would have pulled out from the fight he was going to replace them.
“He’s young, no matter how much money he has, he likes it. He has a strong lever to make money in the UFC or boxing. I believe that I will not leave the UFC that way. Everyone wants to finish with a win, because in this sport you are remembered for your last performance”, Rafael Dos Anjos said.
He is now scheduled to fight Islam Mkahachev at UFC 267.
