Nate Diaz was a guest in the latest episode of Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.
The interview started with Helwani asking Diaz why he might be done with the 155-pound division. Diaz firmly replied that there is simply “no competition” for him in the division. Nate mentioned that he considers and calls himself the ‘King’ of the 155-pound division.
”I’m just done with the 155 thing, that’s in the past now,” Diaz told Helwani. “I just think it’s time to start fighting at a more comfortable weight class. there’s nothing for me there, I already did everything, beat everybody. Feel like I’m the king of that division, so I’m going to leave that where it’s at. There was no love for me over there.”
When Helwani asked Diaz about the legitimacy of the ‘title’, with the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov and of course, the ‘notorious’ Conor McGregor in the division, Diaz was seen shaking his head. He had some firm statements to make regarding this question :
”Khabib, I already slapped him in his face, I already told you guys,” Diaz said. “And I beat Conor before him, quicker than him, easier than him. And then he’s just gonna ignore that and act like whatever? he’s just a little big headed right now, so I’m just like whatever. I don’t need to fight him anyways because I already got a victory over him, so it’s like he’s just going to hide out and play champ and act like a good guy, mister humble f**king Khabib. I’m not buying that s**t. I don’t need to sit around here and chase nobody. Anybody need to do any chasing, they need to come this way.”
”So I’m gonna retire that vision as champ. I slapped Conor and Khabib, so how does that make anyone [else] a winner?”
The altercation with Khabib Nurmagomedov at the World Series of Fighting event in 2015 is pretty well-known. Diaz also explained in his own words how the altercation panned out, from his angle :
”At World Series of Fighting, and the reason he got slapped is because he was not humble and not this nice guy,” Diaz said. “He was sitting there with his friends trying to get a fight with me, taking a picture of me, making fun of me. So I capitalized and told him ‘F**k you’ and I slapped him in his face and he was spooked for his life. His whole team, nobody did s**t. Kron Gracie was with me, we were two on fifteen and the whole Russian army was hard to everyone but they were scared for their lives when that happened.”
Diaz’s shift from the 155-pound division is certain and it doesn’t look like he will be back to the division anytime soon. He has mentioned repeatedly throughout the entire interview that he is decisively “done with the 155 thing” and is moving on from it.
”So why do I have to sit around and chase, he’s [Khabib] new at this whole champion s**t, he thinks he’s ahead of the game, ahead of everyone, and he’s hiding out. But soon he’s gonna realize there’s nobody to fight anyways, he f**ked up because he could have fought me but he’s playing big dog. So you know what, I don’t need to sit here and wait for no fights. I need to get this show on the road, I ain’t playing with these lightweights no more.”
I’m done with 155, I’m done with all those bitches,” he concluded. “Poirier pussed out, hurt his midsection in there, I don’t believe that either. I think he mentally pussed out and now that’s the guy fighting for the title? And Khabib loving that because he’s gonna have an easy fight. It’s like get the f**k outta here. So that’s why that division is retired, I owned all those motherf**kers.”
Diaz mentioned that he wanted Khabib at a point but “Khabib was playing big game.” Diaz said that Conor’s jujitsu in his fight with Khabib was “whack”. He says that he is a real Gracie jujitsu black belt and “that s*** won’t happen to me, I grew up in this s***.”
Regarding the Conor fight and the trilogy, Diaz said the following :
“Conor was really disappointing to me,” Diaz explained. “Like I said, I didn’t lose that fight. Then they give him an easy Eddie Alvarez fight and then he won the title. So I beat him after he won the 45 title and before he won the 155-pound title and then he fought Floyd Mayweather and they are just dissing me, saying I’m turning down fights. I was like ‘dude what are you talking about?’ They are just putting me down, that’s why I haven’t been fighting. Why am I going to work for you when you are over here playing me? I’m not interested in it at all, I’m interested in winners. He lost his fight.”
It’s pretty much confirmed that Nate Diaz is simply not interested in the trilogy fight.
Diaz talked about his upcoming fight with Anthony Pettis and said he was particularly because of Pettis’ fighting style. He said the following about Pettis :
“I think it was just the best fight,” Diaz said. “He’s coming off a good win, he is one of the top guys in the division, one of the most entertaining fighters in the UFC, I like that. He’s a guy that I would actually enjoy watching over the rest of these fighters. Everyone is getting boring. If I’m going to take part in any fight I would like it to be a fight that is interesting. If I’m a fight fan I want to see an interesting fight, I don’t want to see a boring fight.”
Finally, Nate Diaz has also shed some light on what he might be interested in after his MMA career was done. We have seen the now-retired Conor McGregor go toe-to-toe with boxing legend Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and be financially successful. Upon Helwani’s enquiry, Diaz said the following about stepping into a squared circle:
“Yeah, I’ll do all that,” Diaz said. “That’s my next move. If these motherf**kers would let me box like they let other motherf**kers box I would be boxing a long time ago. I’m stuck in a cage. I’m with it though, I’m with it, it’s cool. As soon as we get this fight in, we will see what happens next.”
All in all, this interview shows exactly why the Diaz brothers are so popular. Nate Diaz showed a lot of character and his signature no bulls*** attitude and did little to hold anything back. As he prepares to make his return to the Octagon, we will be ready for more news regarding him.
