Alexander Volkanovksi is coming off of a spectacular unanimous decision victory over Brazilian legend and former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro at UFC 237.
Before the fight, it was expected that he will get a title shot against UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway next. But UFC had other things on their mind, as Holloway is all set to defend his title against Frankie Edgar at UFC 240 in Alberta, Canada.
Although Volkanovksi was quite upset about not being next in line for the title shot, another top featherweight contender Renato Moicano has also given his thoughts about UFC’s recent featherweight matchup. Moicano was also the top contender for the title until he was beaten by Jose Aldo back in February.
I think Max and Volkanovski makes more sense, because Volkanovski is coming off a big win,” Moicano said in an recent interview to Bloody Elbow. “He beat Chad Mendes; Mendes was a great contender. And Jose Aldo is a legend. So for me, the fight to do is Max and Volkanovski.”
Although despite everything he understands why the promotion offered Frankie Edgar was offered a title shot.
“I know Frankie Edgar has a lot of history for the UFC,” Moicano said. “He was champion at lightweight. He has a huge fanbase. Everybody loves him; he is a great guy. For me, he is starting to think about retiring, because I think he is getting (to be) 40, I don’t know.
“I saw him talking about something like, ‘UFC has to give me this title shot, because I did so much for the company.’ It’s like a reward to Frankie. I agree with that too, because Frankie Edgar is a great former champion. And it’ll be a great fight.”
Do you guys think Alexander Volkanovski was more deserving of title shot then Frankie Edgar?
