The Australian was fresh off a TKO victory over Yair Rodriguez in July 2023 before his setbacks.
Diego Lopes (26-6 MMA), meanwhile, will go into his first UFC title match with a five-fight winning streak, the most recent of which was a unanimous decision victory over Brian Ortega at UFC 306 in September. Since entering the UFC ranks in May 2023, the 30-year-old has a 5-1 record.
Alex Volkanovski starts the first round of the main event of UFC 314 with a low kick. He gets another. He makes an unsuccessful effort at a high kick. Diego Lopes attempts a low kick but fails. Diego Lopes recovers swiftly, but not before taking a powerful knee to the face. Volkanovski delivered good punches as Lopes was pressed up against the cage. He finishes the round with some strong ground and pound after knocking the younger fighter back to the canvas.
Diego Lopes hopes to come out on top as the second round of the main event of UFC 314 gets underway. Alex Volkanovski keeps Diego guessing with a low kick and more deft movement. “The Great” kicks his calf. Lopes responds with a barely connected right hook. Volkanovski had a pleasant 1-2. Diego Lopes uses a left hook in response. The Australian kicks low and then hooks left. Lopes intensifies his remark. There are less than two minutes left in the round. Lopes is flung back into the cage by Volkanovski’s powerful right hand after he delivers two low kicks. The former champion delivered a clean hook followed by a low kick. In the pocket, the boxers exchange heavy blows. The Australian has a significant right at the end of that exchange. Diego Lopes makes a tremendous right that knocks Alex Volkanovski to the ground. The former champion now delivers two low kicks. After responding with one of his own, Lopes goes a bit too far. Volkanovski responds with a well-executed low kick. He then executes a clean left hook. After devouring it, Lopes rushes in. Volkanovski’s right hand to the body is terrific. In the pocket, another crazy exchange. Although “The Great” aims for a takedown, it fails. Nevertheless, he immediately gets a wonderful. Diego Lopes kicks his way to the body. He tries to kick a spinning wheel but fails. Volkanovski, Alex, using his right hand. Lopes kicks him in the head in return. Round three concludes with the sound of the horn.

He advances, but Alex Volkanovski counters with a 1-2. “The Great” kicks low and then uses a lovely right hand. Diego Lopes retaliates with a low kick after a nice right of his own. The Australian seeks a takedown but finds none. Hooks are traded by the fighters. Volkanovski made a good remark. After a left hook, he lands a right hook. Diego Lopes gives a strong right in response. Volk is injured. Lopes has a fluury all over him. Alex Volkanovski fires back, but he continues to flee. Volk has a broken eye. He manages to land a nice right over the top, though. Lopes keeps pressing. He wins a significant right. Volk has a strong hook. The sound of the horn.

The Australian kicks low, followed by a right hook. Lopes makes an extremely poor effort at a spinning wheel kick. The former champion is two rights over the top. “The Great” has another right hand. Diego Lopes kicks low in response. A nice 1-2 in return from Volkanovski. Lopes with a straight right that lands flush. Both men land hooks in the pocket. Volk looks to shoot but the takedown is not there for him. Volkanovski with a pair of punches. He steps into a hook. After responding with one of his own, Lopes kicks low. Volk delivered two jabs. Lopes kicks low from the outside. He lunges in, but his right misses. The fight has one minute left. Diego Lopes is pursuing the goal. Alex Volkanovski keeps making fun of him. The kitchen sink is currently being thrown by Lopes. The way he is coming forward is risky. He yells at Volk. The Australian keeps circling and staying inside range. From Volkanovski’s right hand. Lopes also lands. The combat is over when the horn blows.
