Ahead of his unfortunate submission loss at UFC 235 against Ben Askren, Robbie Lawler reflects on the situation that many considered as a poor stroke of luck. On March 2nd, this past Saturday night, Ben Askren made his professional debut with the UFC against the ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler. After beginning round one by imposing his will on Askren early on, former UFC welterweight champion, Lawler, seemed to have bagged his first win since December of 2017. However, after enduring a full-fledged beating from Lawler, Askren managed to turn the tides in his favor by securing a vicious bulldog choke.

Initially, after finding no success in reversing the submission, Robbie Lawler seemed to show no visible signs of counter-attacking the choke. On close observation by referee Herb Dean, Lawler’s once-extended arm seemed to go limp, persuading an immediate stoppage to the fight. The drama, however, was yet to come, when Lawler was seen sitting up and conscious indicating that he was alright from the choke and had not gone into a state of comatose.

During the post-fight presser following UFC 235’s Saturday night action, Robbie Lawler addressed the matter, in particular, with fans and media. While expressing what happened by throwing light on its happenings, Lawler recollects informing Herb Dean, during the fight, that he was fit to continue. Despite the supposed ‘thumbs up’ from Lawler, Dean went ahead and stopped the fight on seeing his hand drop, assuming the possibility of Lawler having been choked-out unconscious.

Lawler continues to defend his UFC 235 incident against Ben Askren, but not at the expense of making an excuse for his loss. A rematch is potentially on the cards citing the misfortune in the first fight, making this one of the most highly-spoken of occurrences in recent UFC history.
