Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is all set to take on former middleweight title challenger Paulo Costa in the main event of UFC Fight Night event on April 17.

The news was first reported by Sherdog.

This will be a big fight for the middleweight division with title implications. This will be Paulo Costa’s first fight since his loss to current middleweight champion Israel Adesanya which took place back in September of 2020 at UFC 253. In that fight, the Kiwi superstar knocked out the Brazilian in the second round.

Prior to that, Paulo Costa was undefeated and was on a five-fight winning streak in the UFC. On the other hand, Robert Whittaker is coming off of wins against Jared Cannonier and Darren Till respectively. He lost his UFC middleweight title to Israel Adesanya back in October of 2019 at UFC 243. In that fight, Adesanya knocked out Robert Whittaker in the second round.

Israel Adesanya vs Robert Whittaker rematch?

Many thought that after Robert Whittaker defeated the likes of Darren Till and Jared Cannonier, he would be immediately considered as the next opponent for Israel Adesanya. However, the Kiwi star is set to fight Jan Blachowicz in order to become a two-division champion.

Israel Adesanya vs Robert Whittaker rematch?

In October, Whittaker said that he wanted to fight Israel Adesanya, but wanted a short break first and as a result, Dana White misinterpreted that he didn’t want to fight Izzy next.

“I certainly think he took a little twist to what I said,” Whittaker told MMA Junkie in early November. “I never said I don’t want to fight Izzy. That’s not something I said. I did not say that. I’m looking to fight March, April (2021). I would like to fight Izzy. … I want that fight. I do want that fight. We just had to work it into that timeline.”

Meanwhile, Dana White had made it clear that Robert Whittaker wasn’t going to get a title shot next.

“I don’t think he’s going to get a title shot next,” White said on a recent ESPN+ fan Q&A with Laura Sanko. “He’ll have to fight somebody else first. It’s going to depend on what happens with Israel and Jan. We’ll see what happens.”
