Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is coming off of a decision win over Jared Cannonier to cement himself as the top contender for the title shot against current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.
Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker faced off last October at UFC 243 in Australia. In that fight, ‘The Style Bender’ knocked out the Whittaker in the second round.
Since then, Israel Adesanya went on to win a decision against Yoel Romero and a knockout win over Paulo Costa at UFC 253 in September. On the other hand, Whittaker too bounced back and secured decision wins over the likes of Darren Till and Jared Cannonier.
These back to back wins have propelled the Australian in the cusp of a title shot and at the press conference at UFC 254, he stated that he will only be fighting again next year and is done for 2020.
This led to Dana White assuming that Robert Whittaker wasn’t interested in fighting Israel Adesanya and the promoter opened doors for a superfight between Jan Blachowicz and Israel Adesanya.
Now in an interview with Mike Heck of MMAFighting, he revealed that it isn’t the case.
“That fight was never offered to me,” Robert Whittaker said. “There wasn’t even talks up in the air. There was no correspondence at all and I guess that’s the most confusing factor and the most annoying part about the whole mess. There was no discussion. There was no communication. There was no dialogue. That’s annoying.
“He twisted my words around. I think because he had his own designs and the UFC—When I say ‘he’ I mean him and the UFC as an organization, I understand that Dana White doesn’t personally want to do things. Or maybe he does, who knows?—but I think they wanted [Adesanya vs. Blachowicz]. That’s a money fight for them. That’s a fight they wanted to push and that’s the only reason I can see that.”
Robert Whittaker: The title fight is my right
Robert Whittaker further added that the title fight was his right as he had earned it following two victories over top tier fighters in the division.
“The title fight is my right after beating Jared because that’s the type of fight it was is a contender fight. That’s the fight I earned. But I have to be there for my family and my kids and the newest member that’s going to be joining my family in January. That’s my highest priority right now is getting my timeline out there and then work around that.”
“There is no fight that interests me other than a title fight of some sort,” Robert Whittaker said. “I’ve earned it. That’s my right. That’s the next step for me, that’s the interest. Apart from that, not really.” (H/T – MMAFighting.com)
