Robert Whittaker says his upcoming middleweight bout might be his final one: “I’ll make a decision following this next fight.”

Robert Whittaker, the former middleweight champion of the UFC, is still open to moving up to 205 pounds.

Since a fight with Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 308 in October of last year, “The Reaper” has not been spotted in action. Robert Whittaker was riding high after defeating Ikram Aliskerov via first-round knockout in June, and he carried that energy into the championship eliminator. Unfortunately for the former middleweight champion, “Borz” swiftly defeated and submitted him in the opening round. Whittaker had experienced yet another disappointment five years after losing the gold.

The 34-year-old expressed interest in dropping to 205 pounds after the fight. Even though Robert Whittaker has never competed at light-heavyweight, he thinks he is physically fit for the class. But even with that desire to gain weight, the former middleweight champion is now maintaining his current weight of 185 pounds. Earlier this week, Whittaker talked about his intentions to get back into the cage on his MMArcade Podcast.

During the conversation, “The Reaper” once more demanded a matchup with Sean Strickland, another previous champion. In his pursuit of UFC middleweight gold, “Tarzan” just lost to Dricus du Plessis via unanimous decision last month. Whittaker said on his podcast that a fight with Strickland would ideally take place during International Fight Week in Las Vegas this summer.

But Robert Whittaker’s last fight at 185 pounds might be against Sean Strickland. The former UFC champion will decide after his next trip to the octagon, but he is not ready to commit to the notion just yet. Whittaker wants to do it correctly if he is increasing his weight.

“Yeah, I’m going to decide [on moving up to light-heavyweight] after this next fight.” Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker stated on his podcast earlier this week. “At the very least, at the very least [one more fight at 185 pounds]. Depending on, I want to really try and push the boundaries of the muscle-to-weight ratio and everything and see where we come up.”

He concluded, “[A fight with Sean Strickland next], that would be great. That would be great, at International Fight Week.”
