Rodtang Jitmuangnon, the ONE Championship Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion has proved his prowess in his field, and now wants to take the next step into the world of mixed martial arts.
I will focus on MMA training: Rodtang Jitmuangnon
Jitmuangnon has been the reigning Flyweight Muay Thai titleholder since 2019 August and is now set to take on Savvas Michael in ONE Muay Thai Flyweight Grand Prix Semi Final at ONE on Prime Video 1 aka ONE Fight Night 1 this 27th of August in Kallang. In his last outing, the 25-year-old defeated Jacob Smith at ONE 157 in the Grand Prix Quarter Final.
While he expresses his desire to become a full time mixed martial artist in future, ‘The Iron Man’ has already had the taste of MMA back in March when he took on former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson at ONE X in a mixed rules four round bout, having alternate MMA and Muay Thai rounds.
Even though Johnson came out victorious via Technical Submission, Jitmuangnon was praised for his MMA skills and while speaking to MMA Underground through an interpreter, the Thai fighter says that he wants to focus in MMA training after his next Muay Thai contest.
“This is not my last Muay Thai fight,” said Jitmuangnon, “Depending on the promoters, they might want me to fight in Muay Thai matches in the future. I may need to defend my world championship belt, but I will focus on MMA training after this. There is no ‘last time’ for me in Muay Thai in the near future.”
“If I can bring him into my game, there is a high chance I’ll beat him,” Jitmuangnon commented on the Savvas fight, “On the other hand, if I am taken to his game, I might stumble. Lately, Savvas has become more prudent and more technical, and his build makes him advantageous with his reach. I have to invest a lot to get him into my game. I mean, I need to eat his strikes first to get him into my game. His punch and attack range are what I have to be careful of. I have to get close to him as much as possible to avoid his attack from the outside.”
While he wishes to make a move to MMA, Jitmuangnon said that he will count on the promotion’s CEO Chatri Sityodtong to pick the opponents for his new endeavor.
“It depends on big boss Chatri. I’m ready to fight with any opponents,” he added.
