Both MMA fans and fighters alike have been bitten by the bug of big super fights. While there were super fights being organised even back in day, the fights between Tito Ortiz and Wanderlei Silva and other bouts between Matt Hughes and B.J. Penn are prime examples of these facts. However, in recent days MMA’s biggest superstar Conor “The Notorious” McGregor has solely been responsible for making super fights a reality again. Not just a reality but under the new UFC ownership, super fights are being widely promoted and encouraged. UFC’s biggest rival currently, Bellator MMA isn’t also too far behind in the super fight trend. Bellator MMA’s welterweight champion and former UFC fighter Rory MacDonald has now teased a super fight with former Bellator MMA and One FC welterweight champion, Ben Askren. MacDonald and Askren recently had a twitter altercation and called out each other for a fight.

Askren who has a MMA record of 18-0-1, was one of the best MMA welterweights of all time. He is a NCAA division 1 wrestler and also a former freestyle Olympic wrestler and competed for the U.S.A in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His Olympic dream was broken by a loss against Cuba’s Ivan Fundora. After Olympics, he soon transitioned into MMA in 2009. He became the Bellator champion by defeating Lyman Good and went on to defend his title four times. His Bellator contract ran out while he was still the champion and Askren decided against signing an extension.
MacDonald won the Bellator MMA welterweight title by defeating former champion Douglas Lima in their fight at Bellator 192 via unanimous decision. He has only had two fights for the promotion till now and had defeated Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley in his promotional debut.
MacDonald was asked by a fan if he would like to fight Askren in a champion vs. champion fight. MacDonald replied that he would fight Askren.’Funky’ later joined the conversation, which led to a twitter spat between the duo. Both fighters alleged that the other was trying to delay and duck a fight with them.
