Rose Namajunas eyeing a title defense against Jessica Andrade

Current UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas is eyeing a return in spring against top contender Jessica Andrade. Rose hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since her rematch victory over Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 223 in Brooklyn, New York earlier this year.

“Thug” Rose has been healing some injuries before stepping back inside the Octagon. In a media scrum at UFC Denver, ‘Thug Rose’ explained to MMA Fighting that she would like to get back in the spring and would like to take on Jessica Andrade.

Right now I’m kind of getting back into strength and conditioning, conditioning my body, not really taking an impact to the head or anything like that. Just working on being a better athlete and, I guess, managing everything else in my life. Then after the holidays, I think we could start talking about a fight. I don’t see how anyone other than Andrade would make sense. I know she wants to stay active, and if she wants to have another fight until I’m ready, then that’s cool. But if not I’d love to have the chance at her.”

Andrade is coming off a devastating knockout victory over Karolina Kowalkiewicz. She is on a three-fight winning streak ever since losing to Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 211 last year.

Despite naming Andrade as the most suitable candidate for challenging her title next, Namajunas also mentioned other interesting names.

Andrade definitely shook things up, even though, obviously, Joanna (Jedrzejczyk) got back into the winning streak of things, and she’s going up,” Namajunas said. “So that’s kind of interesting, as well. Tatiana (Suarez), she’s obviously starting to make some noise and stuff like that, but at the moment, all I’m focused on is being a better martial artist and a better athlete one day at a time.”
