UFC Argentina taking place in Buenos Aires was special for many reasons, not the least of which was the knockout victory for Santiago Ponzinibbio. While the audience was enjoyed the fight and the victory for their hometown hero, Santiago Ponzinibbio has now received an even greater honour. A post of his on Instagram revealed that he had been given the key to the city of La Plata, the capital of the Buenos Aires province.
UFC made its debut appearance in Argentina, in the city of Buenos Aires. This is the first time that UFC has had a show in South America outside Brazil and Chile. Headlining the event was none other than a city of Buenos Aires himself, Santiago Ponzinibbio. In his fight in the main event, he faced Neil Magny who was representing the United States of America.
In the fight, Ponzinibbio dominated his opponent throughout. Magny did not have time to think as Ponzinibbio dogged his steps, and despite knocking him down to the ground did not follow him there. Eventually, Magny was knocked out and the fight was called to a stop, handing Ponzinibbio the victory in the first-ever UFC Argentina headliner.
As a result of the fight and his success, the Mayor Julio Garro of La Plata handed him the key to the city — an honour only bestowed on the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Ed Sheeran, and Alejandro Lemar previously. He was also given the title of “Illustrious Citizen of Buenos Aires”. This is an honour bestowed only onto longtime citizens who have achieved something great in their field.
