Bellator MMA has lately been giving the UFC a run for its money by constantly and consistently putting on great fight cards with some super exciting match-ups. While the UFC and their recent PPV plans have been a complete mess, Bellator has just put on another rather great event. It would be an understatement to say that the Santa Monica based company has been doing increasingly well. Bellator’s strategy is opposite to that of the UFC, unlike the UFC, Bellator MMA does not rely on PPV’s instead it airs on free T.V. in prime time on the Paramount Network. Bellator MMA President Scott Coker has now stated in an interview that Bellator is almost there and will soon churn out even better ratings.
Bellator MMA’s latest event to air was Bellator 199. It featured a heavyweight bout between Ryan Bader and Muhammed Lawal. In the headliner, Bader brutally knocked Lawal out cold with in just 15 seconds of the very first round.
Bellator 199 also featured other highly popular fighters such as Chieck Kongo, Jon Fitch, Paul Daley, etc.
Coker recently told MMA Junkie prior to the Bellator 199 event that the promotion is doing really well in terms of ratings. He also claimed that he expects the promotion to do even better. Here’s what he had to say:
Give us another 18 months – not 18 months, maybe another year. Ratings are tricky, because you’re going to go through peaks and valleys. The Fedor fight obviously did amazing; the (Quinton) ‘Rampage’ (Jackson vs. Chael Sonnen) fight did amazing. But it’s no different than pro wrestling was for the last 15 years. It’s going to go (up and down). This is the type of business that has that type of fluctuation. We’re not going to be immune to that. We’re just going to be part of that process.
When you talk about combat sports in the middle of NBA Finals and hockey and all this sports clutter, we’re doing well.
