In a surprising turn of events, UFC Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley has publicly called out boxing legend Floyd Mayweather.

The brash and confident O’Malley, fresh off his first 135-pound title defense against Marlon Vera at the main event of UFC 299 this 9th March in Miami, had been calling out  former interim WBC lightweight champ Ryan Garcia for a showdown in the squared circle, as well as WBA lightweight titleholder Gervonta Davis.

However, it appears that “Sugar” has had a change of mind, as speaking on The MMA Hour, the UFC’s 135-pound king is eager to skip both Garcia and Davis and lock horns with none other than the legendary Floyd Mayweather.

“Again, I think mentally that kid isn’t where he needs to be.” O’Malley said about Garcia. “We’ll see how he looks against Devin Haney and go from there. I think that an MMA fight is so unrealistic, there’s a zero percent chance he would ever even make it to that fight. It would take one MMA session, one wrestling day, one jiu-jitsu with anyone who knows anything for him to realize this is a bad idea.”

“If anything happened it would be boxing,” he went on, “I mean, I don’t even know if I want to build up with that kind of fight given where his head is now. You know, just because it would be massive. It might not be it, but there’s still big fights up there still. Floyd’s still kicking, Floyd’s still running around in the boxing room.

“I keep doing what I’m doing, I might just skip Ryan. I might just skip Gervonta [Davis]. Go straight for the big dog,” added O’Malley. [H/T BJPenn.com]

Sean O’Malley vs. Floyd Mayweather: Crossover of the Year?

The matchup would be a clash of styles like no other. Mayweather, a defensive genius with a staggering 50-0 undefeated professional boxing record, is a former five division world champion and has an exhibition boxing record of 3-0, with his most recent fight against John Gotti III in June last year ending with a no contest, while his final professional bout was against Conor McGregor back in 2017.

O’Malley, on the other hand, is a dynamic striker with a background in mixed martial arts (MMA). His unorthodox kicks and creative combinations, along with his charming and colourful persona have made him a fan favorite in the UFC.

Both fighters are known for their trash-talking abilities. Mayweather, infamous for his “Money” persona, would undoubtedly have a field day with O’Malley’s colourful hair and tattoos. O’Malley, never one to back down, would fire back with his trademark wit and bravado.

For Mayweather, a victory over O’Malley would add another feather to his cap and solidify his status as one of the greatest combat sports athletes of all time. For O’Malley, a win would catapult him to superstardom and potentially open the door to more crossover matchups.
