Sean O’Malley returns against Thomas Almeida at UFC 260

The UFC bantamweight superstar ‘Sugar Show’ Sean O’Malley will return to the octagon after his first professional loss and he will face Thomas Almeida at UFC 260.

The Bantamweight knockout artist Sean O’Malley announced on his YouTube channel that he would make his return to competition against the fellow striking specialist, Thomas Almeida, at UFC 260 on March 27, 2021. It’s been about six months since O’Malley suffered the first defeat of his professional career, falling to the calf kicks and heavy elbows of Marlon Vera … though O’Malley himself doesn’t quite remember it that way.

The ‘Sugar Show’ previously said Almeida turned down a fight with him at UFC 258, which takes place on Feb. 13 at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.

“He turned it down, he said my right hand was too powerful or something along those lines of COVID or something, so he turned the fight down,” Sean O’Malley said. “Good decision on his part would have been a nasty KO.”

‘Sugar Show’ Sean O’Malley ready to return

Sean O’Malley (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC), who earned his way into the UFC through “Dana White’s Contender Series,” opened his professional career with 12 straight wins, including four in the UFC, before suffering his first loss against Marlon Vera last August at UFC 252. O’Malley, 26, was finished by the first-round TKO and was taken off on a stretcher after suffering a foot injury. O’Malley hasn’t fought since.

Once one of the brightest prospects in the promotion’s 135-pound class, Almeida is on a shaky footing after going 1-4 in his past five outings. Almeida, 29, is on a three-fight losing streak after dropping decisions to Jimmie Rivera and Jonathan Martinez with a TKO against Rob Font in between. Almeida (22-4 MMA, 5-4 UFC) opened his professional career with 21 consecutive wins, including four in the UFC. He hasn’t tasted victory since November 2016 when he TKO’d Albert Morales.

Almeida may be able to relate to Sean O’Malley’s current position a bit, as the Brazilian was once an undefeated knockout artist on the rise. Since Cody Garbrandt sent him from the ranks of the unbeaten, however, Almeida has struggled to right the ship. He’s fought less and less consistently, and he enters this bout following three straight defeats. If there’s a silver lining for Almeida, he remains just 29 years old, young enough to turn things back around.

 UFC 260 lineup now includes:

  • Champ Stipe Miocic vs. Francis Ngannou – for the heavyweight title
  • Champ Alexander Volkanovski vs. Brian Ortega – for the featherweight title
  • Jimmy Crute vs. Johnny Walker
  • Modestas Bukauskas vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk
  • Hannah Goldy vs. Jessica Penne
  • Vicente Luque vs. Tyron Woodley
  • Thomas Almeida vs. Sean O’Malley
