Sean Strickland recently used Dana White’s remarks from UFC 297 to support his case for a rematch with Dricus du Plessis.
In a close decision, Sean Strickland lost his UFC middleweight title to du Plessis in the main fight of the inaugural pay-per-view event of 2024, which took place at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada.
Recently, Sean Strickland went to X and demanded a rematch with the South African. He compared it to Israel Adesanya’s quick title shot against Alex Pereira, the champion at the time, at UFC 287 in April of last year, following their first-round knockout at UFC 281 in November 2022. Sean Strickland wrote:
“You know, I don’t care about fight politics or a belt, but it makes me laugh they gave Izzy a rematch to Alex after getting slept. I lost a close decision that Dana himself thought I won. Everyone did. The stats did. That needs to be run back.”

Sal D’Amato gave Sean Strickland the first, third, and fifth rounds of the fight, scoring the match 48-47 in his favor, according to the judge’s scorecards. However, ‘Stillknocks’ was credited with winning rounds two, three, and four by judges Derek Cleary and Eric Colon, who awarded him a 48-47 score.
Much debate about who was the rightful winner ensued in the MMA community as a result of the result, with many wondering if du Plessis had done enough to unseat “Tarzan.” At the UFC 297 post-fight press conference, White repeated this sentiment by claiming that Strickland would have been the winner if he had been keeping score.
