Before Sean Strickland secured his June 1 clash with Paulo Costa at UFC 302, there was another potential matchup on the table. The UFC had considered pitting Strickland against the undefeated Chechen monster, Khamzat Chimaev, in Saudi Arabia. However, this intriguing bout never materialized due to unforeseen travel-related issues on Strickland’s side.

When asked about the possibility of fighting in Saudi Arabia, Strickland didn’t mince words. He responded, “Nah, I wouldn’t go to Saudi Arabia. Hang out with a bunch of burqas, I’m good, man…” His statement reflects his personal feelings about the cultural differences and attire norms in the region.

Saudi Arabia is known for its conservative dress code, which includes the abaya (a loose-fitting robe) and the niqab (a face veil). The burqa, often associated with Afghanistan, is not commonly worn in Saudi Arabia. However, Strickland’s comment highlights the cultural unfamiliarity he perceives.

Strickland continued, “Something about burqas and no bikinis and sh*t doesn’t sound like my place.” His straightforward assessment underscores the contrast between Saudi Arabia’s modest beachwear and the more revealing swimwear seen in other parts of the world.

Sean Strickland’s Shift to Paulo Costa

Ultimately, the fight with Khamzat Chimaev didn’t materialize, and the UFC pivoted to Paulo Costa as Sean Strickland’s opponent. Costa, a Brazilian star, aims to climb back into the title picture after a recent loss to Robert Whittaker. Strickland, on the other hand, seeks redemption after surrendering the middleweight strap to Dricus Du Plessis.

Chimaev vs. Whittaker

As fate would have it, Khamzat Chimaev will now face former champion Robert Whittaker in Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom Arena in Riyadh will host this intriguing matchup, promising fireworks inside the octagon.

While Sean Strickland and Chimaev won’t square off in the desert, UFC 302 still promises excitement. The lightweight world title headliner features reigning champion Islam Makhachev against division staple Dustin Poirier. Fans eagerly await the action, knowing that words may ignite rivalries, but actions determine champions.
