With his decisive TKO victory over Curtis Blaydes, Sergei Pavlovich has made it plain that he expects to next face up for the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
The Octagon was shared by Pavlovich and Blaydes at UFC Vegas 71’s main event. A small number of people watched the action as it took place inside the UFC Apex. Blaydes’ night ended early thanks to Pavlovich’s intervention. Just over three minutes into the first round, he achieved the TKO victory. Pavlovich received a “Performance of the Night” bonus for winning.
Sergei Pavlovich will wait for the winner of Jones vs Miocic
Sergei Pavlovich told reporters backstage after the fight that he intends to be next in line regardless of when the heavyweight title battle between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic happens.
“I’ll rest,” Pavlovich said. “I’ll eat, I’ll sleep, I’ll rest some more, I’ll wait.”
Pavlovich admitted that he can’t decide if Jones or Miocic would be the easier fight for him.
“I wouldn’t say that either of them would be an easy fight,” Pavlovich said. “I mean, they’re both hard warriors so I would have to prepare for whoever it is, then be ready for whoever they give me.” (H/T – MMAJunkie.com)
Prior to the battle, Pavlovich was ranked third among heavyweights in the UFC. Once the rankings are refreshed, that position is probably going to stay the same. But it’s possible that he could advance to the second spot. Pavlovich’s record now stands at 18-1 after his victory over Blaydes, with 15 of those victories coming by way of knockout. His only loss in professional MMA occurred against Alistair Overeem in 2018. Overeem won the fight via first-round TKO.
Concerning how long Pavlovich will have to wait to find out what happens in Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic, UFC President Dana White is optimistic that the matchup will be revealed shortly. The goal, according to the UFC president, is for that title match to occur at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
