A UFC heavyweight matchup between former champion Stipe Miocic and top contender Tai Tuivasa is in the works for a UFC event which is scheduled to take place in July of 2022. According to the sources, UFC is trying to set up this fight for the no.1 contender spot in the heavyweight division. Recently, the reigning heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou defended his title against then Interim heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane. Francis dominantly won the fight and used his wrestling to nullify Ciryl’s striking and finally got the decision to win. Now the UFC heavyweight division is kind of dry due to the lack of new contenders and is in desperate need of a rising contender.
Stipe Miocic is the former two-time UFC heavyweight champion. He is often regarded as the greatest UFC heavyweight champion of all time. Stipe Miocic had defended his title four times during his two title reigns, he holds the record for most wins in heavyweight title fights along with the longest title defense streak in the heavyweight division, with three consecutive defenses.
He won the title after he defeated then heavyweight champion Fabrício Werdum at UFC 198. He then went on to defend his title against Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos, and Francis Ngannou. He then lost his title against Daniel Cormier but won the rematch and also won the trilogy fight against Cormier.
Stipe Miocic then fought Francis Ngannou in a rematch at UFC 260. He lost that fight via KO in the second round and it ended his second title reign. In his previous interviews, Stipe has repeatedly said that he is interested in either a title fight or a fight for the no.1 contender spot against a top-ranked fighter.
Tai Tuivasa has become the hottest prospect in the division in recent times. He is currently riding an amazing five-fight winning streak. He came into the UFC with great hype and with an undefeated professional record. But he could not hold his record for a long time as he suffered back-to-back losses. He then got back to the winning track after his KO win over Stefan Struve. He then scored more than four wins over Harry Hunsucker, Greg Hardy, Augusto Sakai, Derrick Lewis. In his last fight, he faced his toughest challenge as he fought former title challenger Derrick Lewis at UFC 271. He won that fight via brutal KO in the second round.
If this fight does take place then the winner of this battle will definitely be next in line for the heavyweight title shot.
