UFC 230 co-main event fighters, top ranked lightweight contender Dustin Poirier and popular MMA fighter Nate Diaz have been demanding to officially be made the main-event of the evening and be given a shot for a new 165 pounds title. The UFC management and the UFC President Dana White have been denying and out-right refusing the idea of a new 165 pounds division being created and have also stated that they will find a headliner for the UFC 230 card soon. Though, MMA fans around the globe were sent into a frenzy when Diaz announced on Twitter that he is bringing a new division with him on his return, his opponent Poirier later claimed the same. However, the rumours later turned out to be false. While people have been busy wondering who is telling the truth, noted MMA journalist Luke Thomas has revealed why Diaz and Poirier are making claims about a new division being created.
Thomas, who is a well-known combat sports journalist and the new host of MMA Fighting’s, The MMA Hour, opined on Twitter that by making such claims Diaz and Poirier are trying to force the UFC’s hand into making them the main-event for UFC 230 and possibly even giving them a title shot. Here’s what he stated:
Diaz and Poirier are shrewdly forcing UFC’s hand. By promoting the idea of their bout as main event in new division, they’ll force fans to weigh any main event that gets picked *in comparison* to their bout. UFC knows this. Could affect what gets made.
