On Tuesday, WWE legend The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) was appointed to the board of directors of TKO Group, the publicly traded company consisting of the UFC and WWE.

Apart from his appointment, the former WWE Champion has been granted full ownership of “The Rock” trademark, which had been owned by WWE. He has also signed a new services and merchandising agreement with WWE “that provides for his promotional, licensing, and other services,” per a release.

The Rock comments on his new role

“Being on the TKO Board of Directors, and taking full ownership of my name, ‘The Rock,’ is not only unprecedented, but incredibly inspiring as my crazy life is coming full circle,” Johnson said in a statement. “At my core, I’m a builder who builds for and serves the people, and [TKO CEO] Ari [Emanuel] is building something truly game-changing.

“I’m very motivated to help continue to globally expand our TKO, WWE, and UFC businesses as the worldwide leaders in sports and entertainment — while proudly representing so many phenomenal athletes and performers who show up every day putting in the hard work with their own two hands to make their dreams come true and deliver for our audiences. I’ve been there, I’m still there and this is for them.”

Whether it’s his TV and film company Seven Bucks Productions, Teremana Tequila, Zoa Energy, Project Rock or the Under Armour clothing line that has an agreement with the UFC for fighters’ fight-week footwear, The Rock has been quite busy following his run with WWE. ‘The Great One’ also has a partnership with the newly merged United Football League.

The former WWE superstar has maintained his connection with TKO’s holdings. In a future film, he will play UFC veteran and MMA great Mark Kerr.

Johnson has been an ardent supporter of the UFC and has been friends with WWE president Nick Khan for a long time. Nick Khan’s sister Nahnatchka was the creator and executive producer of Johnson’s “Young Rock.”

“Very few people on the planet understand the convergence of sports, entertainment, media, and business like ‘Rock,’” TKO executive chairman Vince McMahon said in a statement. “We are proud to have him join the TKO board to help take our company to new heights.”

With WrestleMania 40 approaching soon, there is a possibility we might see The Rock back inside the squared circle.
