Canelo Alvarez is set to make his return and fans are excited about it. He remains a fan favorite and his kind post-fight gestures have drawn attention over the years. We will take a look at the instances when he showed empathy to his opponents following his bouts.

Canelo Alvarez is certainly one of the top boxers of the last decade. He has bagged four weight world titles and has a record of 58 victories from 62 fights over a 16-year career. It is not only because of his dominance inside the ring for which fans love him. Fans have noted that he shows great respect for his opponents following contests.

Canelo respects his opponents

It has been noted that every time he finishes an opponent, he requests the crowd to calm down as he tends to his opponent. This aspect makes him a standout from most fighters, who usually lose control of their emotions after winning.

He once said: “I like to respect my opponents when they respect me.”

“Got a new favourite boxer now,” “That is what you call winning with class! Great sportsmanship!” “That’s a serious level of empathy” and “And just like that. I’m a fan” were responses of his fans.

Following his fight with Gennady Golovkin last year, he said in his post-fight interview: “Thank you so much my friend. Thank you Golovkin, thank you, thank you for everything. We give the fans three good fights, and thank you for everything.”

Canelo went on to add: “He’s a really good fighter, I know. He’s strong, he’s a great fighter. And that’s why we are here, right? I am glad to share the ring with him. It’s very important for me, for my legacy, for my country, for everybody. I’ve gone through some very difficult things in my life. I’ve actually shown that defeats are great because they enable you to come back and show humility. I’m going to keep going to keep my legacy going.”

Canelo had a harsh childhood as he was bullied for his red hair and freckles. However, he once stepped up and hit the bully breaking his nose. It’s worth noting that several years later, he came across the same person at a restaurant, and he paid the bill for the bully and his family. What a class act!

Alvarez has been away from action following a unanimous decision victory over Jermell Charlo in September. He is currently on a hiatus but he has announced that he will make his comeback on May 4 in Las Vegas.
