A former UFC light heavyweight champion and one of the biggest stars in this history of the promotion, Tito Ortiz (21-12-1) was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2012. Following a 15-year run in the UFC, he went on to fight four times for Bellator MMA before taking a one-off under the Golden Boy MMA banner to complete his career trilogy with fellow UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Lidell. Ortiz, 46, fought most recently in December 2019, scoring a first-round submission win over Alberto Del Rio for Combate Americas.

Ortiz was elected to office in November and then appointed mayor pro tem one month later. However, he created concerns among the council for his refusal to wear a mask while on official business as required by current COVID-19 safety protocols. Ortiz was also criticized by council members for being untruthful in some of his postings on social media, as well, many of which had a very combative tone.

Huntington Beach mayor Kim Carr, along with council members Mike Posey and Dan Kalmick, originally proposed stripping Ortiz of his duties in the mayor pro tem role, which includes filling in for the mayor if ever needed and running council meetings – responsibilities they felt Ortiz has proven unfit to execute.

Tito has been very vocal about his distrust in the COVID-19 pandemic and everything related to it on social media and as part of his role on the Huntington Beach city council. He has even been criticized by fellow politicians for not wearing masks inside buildings, as he doesn’t believe in them. In Ortiz’s mind, the virus is not all that serious, and in a recent interview, he said that he wants to get COVID-19 so that his body can fight it.

“I wash my hands normally and I have no problem. My friends, I huge them. I hope I get it. I mean, that way I can fight it,” Tito said (via Borrachinha Depot). “And one of those things I can tell you guys right now that my doctor, and five of the doctors I talked to, you go to the hospital for COVID, don’t be put under a respirator. Do not do that. There’s medication out there right now that I’ll post later. They give five of the medications that take care of you and knock it out. 15 of my friends have taken the same medication.”

Like everyone else, Tito is allowed to have his opinion about the coronavirus and vaccinations and medications. The problem is, he is an elected official and is in a position of power and authority.
