While Jones and Makhachev actively try to claim the top spot in the pound-for-pound rankings, Tom Aspinall calls the entire conversation redundant.

Pound-for-pound rankings are common in combat sports, and MMA is no exception. The UFC also has its men’s pound-for-pound list, currently topped by Islam Makhachev followed by Jon Jones. Fans constantly argue about who deserves the top spot, with UFC president Dana White firmly believing that “Bones” is the pound-for-pound king.

However, Tom Aspinall has a different perspective. In an interview with MMA Junkie, the interim UFC heavyweight champion expressed his disdain for P4P rankings. He called them “the stupidest, silliest, most ludicrous concepts that anyone could ever make up.”

Tom Aspinall’s Take on P4P Rankings

Aspinall pointed out that it’s a purely hypothetical discussion, as fighters can’t all be the same size and fight each other. He humorously compared it to asking if a monkey and a giraffe were the same size, who would win in a fight.

Tom Aspinall’s goals in the UFC don’t revolve around being on top of the P4P rankings. He sees no point in arguing because there’s no real way to prove who would win in a fight between him and someone lighter like Demetrious Johnson, even if they were the same size. He likened the P4P discussion to wondering if Ronda Rousey could beat Dustin Poirier if she were a man.

Currently ranked 13th in the men’s pound-for-pound rankings, Aspinall remains focused on his fights rather than hypothetical debates. While Jones and Makhachev vie for the top spot, Aspinall’s stance remains clear: P4P rankings are “ridiculous” and not worth the fuss.

Tom Aspinall dismisses P4P rankings as a futile exercise, emphasizing that fighters’ sizes and abilities vary too much to make meaningful comparisons. Whether you agree or not, it’s clear that Aspinall won’t lose sleep over his position in the ranking.
