Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson were atop the lightweight division in their primes, but never managed to meet in the octagon, with five bouts canceled. Nonetheless, the two still carry the grudge for one another.
Khabib retired as the UFC Lightweight champion after submitting Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. A few months ago, he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. Currently, he is handling his own MMA promotion Eagle FC and has no intention of resuming his career.
On the other hand, ‘El Cucuy’ has gone down a steep hill. Once undefeated for five years and across 12 bouts, the former interim champion is currently on a five-fight losing streak, with his latest setback coming against Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 279. However, Ferguson still intends to compete in the Octagon.
‘The Eagle’ recently analyzed the current situation of Ferguson and says he understands that the 38-year-old continues to compete for money, but believes that the veteran’s time has passed.
“(Tony Ferguson) his is time is up, and there’s no way to get it back,” Nurmagomedov told UFC Russia in a recent interview, “Not Khabib, not Tony, nobody. We had our time, and it passed. He continues to fight. He needs money. You have to pay your bills in the U.S., and I’m sure that since he’s a Californian, I know all the Californian fighters – everything he earned, take half of that. I think he keeps fighting for money to pay bills, taxes. He has a family. I think he has two kids. I don’t blame him, but you can’t get back time. When your time goes away it doesn’t ask your name.” [H/TMMAJunkie]
Upon getting air of Khabib’s comment, Ferguson took to Twitter, calling his Russian counterpart a ‘fathead’ in his fiery response.
