Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson suffered a unanimous decision loss to Charles Oliveira at UFC 256 last weekend in Las Vegas.
It was a completely one-sided fight where throughout the fight, Charles Oliveira showcased his dominant ground game and didn’t give Tony Ferguson a chance to bounce back in the fight. He controlled the fight on the ground as well as on the feet.
Tony Ferguson at times looked clueless as to what to do next. He was barely saved in the first round by the bell when Oliveira had Ferguson in an armbar. The second round started with Oliveira kicking Ferguson’s injured arm and later took the fight to the ground, where he controlled the top position for most of the round.
The third round also ended in a similar manner as Ferguson had no answer for Oliveira’s superior ground game.
Tony Ferguson issues statement following the loss
Following his defeat, Tony Ferguson aka El Cucuy took to social media to issue a statement about his loss to Charles Oliveira.
“My crew. No excuses, I fell flat.” Tony Ferguson wrote. “I went out and welcomed the attack instead of defend. The warm up time in the back for UFC hasn’t been the same since pre-covid. Still no excuses, times change and so do people. The time from the hotel to the UFC Apex is much more condensed and the aggressive level we needed was not reached.”
Tony Ferguson continued:
”After the fight, we were checked by doctors and went back to the hotel. I felt it was in order to hit pads and spar immediately because the fight was fresh in my mind and blood circulation in my arm was needed. I really needed to figure out what the F’n problem was from the fight. Solution: Pre-fight time management.”
Tony Ferguson is now on a two-fight losing streak and it is also for the first time in his MMA career that the former interim champion is on a losing streak. Prior to the Oliveira fight, Ferguson lost via TKO to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249.
