Former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson fought last weekend in the co-main event of UFC 256 against Charles Oliveira.
It was a completely one-sided fight where throughout the fight, Charles Oliveira showcased his dominant ground game and didn’t give Tony Ferguson a chance to bounce back in the fight. He controlled the fight on the ground as well as on the feet.
Tony Ferguson at times looked clueless as to what to do next. He was barely saved in the first round by the bell when Oliveira had Ferguson in an armbar. The second round started with Oliveira kicking Ferguson’s injured arm and later took the fight to the ground, where he controlled the top position for most of the round.
The third round also ended in a similar manner as Ferguson had no answer for Oliveira’s superior ground game.

“Right here, we’re not going to waste energy here—you guys shouldn’t either in jiu jitsu matches,” Tony Ferguson said during the live stream. “Just be patient. Wait for the opportunity for him to get so lazy that, in the third round, he doesn’t even advance to mount anymore. What he does is he stays controlled in the side position, looking for something completely different—a different move—because he was mentally broken first round.
“I went back and watched film, without the commentary like ‘oh he got dominated,’ this and that,” Ferguson added. “Ok, to the untrained people in jiu jitsu: advancing positions in traditional martial arts, you will get points and advantages and different types of points. But the judging and the scoring in terms of the commission [in MMA], I don’t even know if it’s there.” Tony Ferguson said. (H/T – BJpenn.com)
