The fight between Dustin Poirier and Tony Ferguson is not happening but UFC is looking for a new opponent for Ferguson to fight at UFC 254.

Just weeks after rumors first started swirling that the promotion was attempting to book a fight between the former interim lightweight champions, Poirier revealed that he was no longer training for a showdown against Ferguson on Oct. 24 at UFC 254.

“UFC and I didn’t come to terms,” Poirier told ESPN this week. “I will not be fighting on Oct. 24.”

UFC President Dana White has confirmed that talks with Poirier have ended and a new opponent will be secured for Ferguson in his return to action. After VEGAS 10 during the post-fight press conference UFC President, Dana White was asked about the Poirier vs Ferguson fight to which he replied “No, we’re not even trying to salvage it,” White said (via MMA Fighting). We’re getting another fight. Yep, it’ll happen.”

Whats’s next for Tony Ferguson and Dustin Poirier?

Poirier (26-6 MMA, 18-5 UFC) and Ferguson (25-4 MMA, 15-2 UFC) for the October event, excitement for the matchup reached a fever pitch with fans and media. But since there fight is off now both these fighters will have to find new opponents and a new schedule to fight.

Tony Ferguson has not fought since UFC 249 in May when he lost to Justin Gaethje via fifth-round TKO. The loss marked the end of a fantastic, 12-fight unbeaten streak for the ‘El Cucuy’. Ferguson is coming off a 5th-round TKO loss in a brutal beatdown against Justin Gaethje.

This bout was for the interim lightweight championship. Fans have been blaming the loss on his double weight cut before the bout. They believe that the weight cut ‘drained him.’ Tony has been the interim champion in the past but was stripped of his title when he pulled out because of an injury. With Poirier ostensibly off the table, it’s not clear who Ferguson will fight next, though Dan Hooker and Charles Oliveira both seem like strong possibilities.

With a Ferguson fight no longer in the picture, Poirier will also have to look for his next opponent. That being said, it seems that he and the UFC are currently at odds in terms of his payment for his next fight. Dustin is one of the top contenders in the lightweight division and is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Dan Hooker in a five-round slugfest. The former interim lightweight champion also faced the current champion of the division, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Unfortunately, Poirier lost by a rear-naked choke in the third round.
