Former interim champion Tony Ferguson will no longer compete at UFC 254 which is scheduled to take place at the Fight Island in Abu Dhabi on October 24.

Ferguson was initially slated to fight Dustin Poirier at UFC 254, but the fight fell of after Poirier and the UFC failed to come to a financial agreement.

Following Poirier pulling out of the fight, it was revealed by ESPN that former Bellator welterweight champion Michael Chandler was the front runner to face Tony Ferguson.

The news about Tony Ferguson no longer fighting at UFC 254 was first reported by Aaron Bronsteter of TSN.

“I spoke with Dana White earlier and he confirmed that Tony Ferguson will no longer be competing at UFC 254.” Aaron Bronsteter reported.

One name that has been discussed is free agent Michael Chandler, the former Bellator lightweight champion who fought out his contract in early August. The UFC is in advanced talks with Chandler, per sources, and is the front-runner to sign him, though a deal isn’t finalized just yet,” Ariel Helwani wrote on ESPN yesterday about a potential fight between Tony Ferguson and Michael Chandler.

What’s next for Tony Ferguson?

It’s incredibly unfortunate for fight fans who have wanted to see Tony Ferguson take on Dustin Poirier and even Ferguson get back into the Octagon following his brutal loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 last May.

With Ferguson no longer fighting at UFC 254, the only way UFC can make the long-awaited fight happen is by making amends with Dustin Poirier. Even after UFC 254, there are two more PPVs scheduled for later this year and there’s a high chance that a deal is finalised and fans get to see both fighters scrapping inside the Octagon.

To give fans an idea as to how badly Tony wanted to fight Poirier, the former interim champion took to twitter and told Dana White to pay Poirier to make the fight happen.

“‘Here’s Lookin’ At You Kid’ Pay the man @danawhite @ufc Love ya’ll but let’s give the Hardcore & Casual fans what they deserve, a good fight Sir -CSO-@DustinPoirier #ufc254.”, he tweeted

Poirier also replied appreciating the effort made by Tony Ferguson and reacted to it on twitter.

Tony’s the type of guy who would manage his opponent and get him a new contract for the fight to happen.” Poirier tweeted.

Do you think the UFC and Dustin will come to terms this time?
