The notorious Conor McGregor, former double Champion of the UFC and a global star, has been a significant figure in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for years. In the past, McGregor has headlined eight of the top 10 best-selling pay-per-view events in UFC history. However, it looks like he doesn’t have a lot of time left with the company.

In March 2024, McGregor has confirmed that he has only two fights left on his contract with the UFC. This revelation has sparked speculation about his future in the sport, particularly given his recent hints at a return to the boxing world.

Talking to the media he said, “Do we sign a new deal?”

“Do I go? Am I a free agent? I love the UFC dearly. My heart is in the UFC — my catalogue, my life. I love everyone in the company and all the fighters and all the events and all the shows and cards. I wish to continue this. How that looks, I have no clue.”

McGregor’s comments suggest that there has been “no talk” about what happens past the two fights left on his deal. This lack of communication could potentially impact his motivation and focus, as he has hinted at losing interest if he doesn’t receive any feedback.

How much is his contract worth?

McGregor’s contract with the UFC is reportedly worth between $16-$20 million per fight (including PPV earnings), a testament to his drawing power and marketability. However, the last time he fought and was paid by the promotion was in 2021.

Currently we don’t have any specifics of his future fights, including potential opponents and dates, remain uncertain. These factors can highly impact the PPV buys and hence Conor’s earnings.

Despite the uncertainty, McGregor has expressed enthusiasm for his return to the Octagon. He has been publicly campaigning for a date in June during International Fight Week. He also mentioned a potential fight with Michael Chandler, a former three-time Bellator lightweight champion.

The UFC has previously attempted to wait out fighters like Francis Ngannou and Nate Diaz in the hopes of re-signing them, only for both to make their exit from the promotion and land big paydays elsewhere. Whether McGregor will follow a similar path or choose to renew his contract with the UFC remains to be seen.

In the meantime, fans eagerly await McGregor’s return to the Octagon (or WWE perhaps). His last fight was in July 2021, where he suffered a broken leg during his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier. His recovery has been closely followed by fans and media alike, with Conor McGregor himself providing updates on his progress.
