The current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has been claiming for a long long time now that he is the greatest welterweight of all time. In a recent interview, he again reiterated his claim and stated that “in reality, I’m the greatest welterweight of all time”.
Woodley was recently in a conversation with MMA Fighting. In the interview he stated that GSP’s retirement hasn’t got anything to do with his own greatness, and that in reality, he is the greatest welterweight of all time. Here’s what he had to say:
You guys will see on Saturday, when it is game time why I keep saying that I am the greatest welterweight of all time.
Naa, I mean he (GSP) had already retired in my mind. He had not fought since fighting Bisping (Michael) at UFC 217. And he showed no signs of coming back and he was out for so long, four years before that (Bisping fight at UFC 217). And I kind a gave up hope on fighting him. When he took the fight against Bisping versus taking a fight against me. I knew it was not going to happen. I knew that he was offered to fight me, two, three or even four times. But it was just something that he did not want to do. He had already done what he needed to do at welterweight division. He had his long reign, he held the belt for a long time. It takes a lot to hold this belt though.
Him leaving has nothing to do with me being the greatest welterweight of all time. I just gotta give him his respect and his due because he deserves it, but in reality I’m going to be the greatest welterweight of all time.
