Ukraine war almost ‘destroyed’ Oleksandr Usyk

His family was impacted by the war in Ukraine when Usyk and his young family had to flee their home in Vorzel, Bucha. His ancestral house was destroyed and the family lost a lot of possessions.

Usyk said: “My children are asking: ‘Daddy, why do they want to kill us?’ I don’t know how to answer that.

“My family are not in Ukraine now but a lot of people I know and a lot of my close friends are inside the country.

“I am in touch with them every day, I am asking them for updates.

“I didn’t want to leave the country. I want to live there, still. Straight after the fight I will go back to Ukraine.”

Usyk doing whatever he can to help his people

Despite his packed training regime Usyk has done whatever he can to help his nation. He talked about his struggles with the war in the past.
“I am motivated by the idea that I must help my nation, my people,” Usyk told CNN Sport. “If I have the abilities, if I have strength to do that, if I can do it.”

“God has given me this chance to be on TV, to be, thanks to God, known in the world of sports.

“This is my opportunity to share with people about what’s happening. Many people in the world think it’s just some kind of a game happening here, and we are just making it all up.”
