Conor McGregor is no stranger to controversies. A huge controversy that he is currently surrounded with is the claim he made about wanting and offering to fight UFC featherweight contender Frankie Edgar at UFC 222. A few days ago Edgar’s manager and coaches had come out and slammed McGregor in various interviews and revealed that his comments are completely false. “The Answer” has now come out and has confirmed that McGregor did offer to fight him but it was for a non-existent 165-pound title.

“The Answer” is currently on a two fight win streak and was expected to face the UFC featherweight champion, Max Holloway at UFC 222. However, Holloway was forced to pull out of the fight due to a leg injury. Edgar will now face top prospect Brian Ortega at the event.

Conor McGregor has a MMA record of 21-2 and is currently the UFC’s lightweight champion. He was also previously the UFC featherweight champion and is the only UFC fighter in history to simultaneously hold two titles. He last fought at UFC 205 against the former UFC lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez. He won the title by brutally knocking out Alvarez in the second round via punches. He then went on to have a high-profile, much talked about, multi-million dollar boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last August. McGregor lost the match via TKO in the tenth round. He had recently claimed via a social media post that he had offered to step in and replace Max Holloway against Edgar. However, Edgar had rejected the preposition.

Edgar was recently a guest on MMA Fighting’s, The MMA Hour and was asked about McGregor’s claims. He confirmed that McGregor had indeed offered to fight him. He also revealed a lot of other details about McGregor’s rather peculiar offer. Here’s what he had to say:

“I woke up from a nap and I saw it on Twitter, that’s the first I heard of it.  I mean, come on, there is no 165-pound belt, you know what I’m saying? I want to fight on the moon. You know what I mean? Come on.

He doesn’t want to defend his own belt. What, he wants to fight me? I mean, hey, that’d be great. That’d be great for me. Let’s be real. I’m not scared to fight anybody. Come on, I’ve been doing too long to be scared to fight anybody. I mean, if anything, that would be very good for me, to fight Conor McGregor.

I would’ve fought him in any weight class, to be honest with you. I think if it was real, Dana would’ve called me personally,” Edgar added. “He’s done before. With something like that, Dana would’ve called me personally, and he didn’t, so I have to think that it wasn’t real.

I don’t know, I think Conor’s just being Conor, man, he’s the best at it, right? He’s the best at making news and staying relevant. I don’t mean relevant, he’s the most popular guy in our sport, this and that, but staying in the news cycle. He does it better than anybody, except maybe Floyd Mayweather.

I’m not surprised by it, and I’m not getting sidetracked by it because it doesn’t matter, It’s non-news to me. Because the news is I’m fighting a guy who fights in the UFC right now, Brian Ortega.”
