Chris Gruetzemacher defeated Joe Lauzon by TKO (corner stoppage)

UFC 223: Play by Play Updates & Live Results -

It’s been 14 long years since Joe Lauzon made his MMA debut and his entire career has been marked with fights that defined his fighting style. But tonight it was all Chris Gruetzemacher who put on a dominant performance. The first round began on a slow note but as the round progressed Chris started to land more significant strikes. It took a while for Joe to come back but he lacked power in his punches. Chris got the better of Joe as they clinched and traded punches. Chris did an excellent job of mixing up short elbows, body shots, uppercuts and leg kicks which caused serious damage to Joe’s right eye. By the end of the second round, Chris has landed more than 125 significant strikes sending Joe fully bloodied and with empty gas tank to his corner who did the right thing to stop the fight. Joe has now lost three in a row while Chris rebounded from his two fight losing skid.

Zabit Magomedsharipov defeated Kyle Bochniak via unanimous decision

Artsy, calm, composed and FLASHY!! that’s exactly how Zabit performed tonight. Right in the opening round, Zabit missed a cartwheel head kick which could have sealed the fate of Kyle. Using his long reach and quick footwork Zabit was able to land more strikes. Kyle continued to cover the distance and get inside to reach Zabit’s chin but his attempts went in vain as Zabit landed more leg kicks and got cut in the forehead. In the final round, Kyle came back possessed and despite eating multiple strikes, was able to land some decent shots. The final seconds saw both the featherweights exchange loads of punches and getting better of each other.

Renato Moicana defeated Calvin Kattar via unanimous decision

Fight starts slow as both the fighters take time to read each other; clearly a mark of respect. Kattar open’s the first blow and hurts Renato. It takes him some to recover and once he did he put on combinations using his boxing and kicks. Renato is more successful using his legs and chops down Calvin who is looking to get back with his offense. He starts to bleed from the nose and his legs giving up slowly. It’s all Renato from here until the final seconds of the third round.

Rose Namajunas defeated Joanna Jedrzejczyk via Unanimous Decision

UFC 223: Play by Play Updates & Live Results -

A lot of questions were answered in the rematch. The first fight was not a fluke, Joanna had no issues with the weight cut this time, she looked crisp with her striking, Rose fought a kickboxing match and proved she is the true champion. In the first two rounds, Rose looked phenomenal with her striking and put Joanna in bad spots. The lead left hook which was the game changer in their first match caused tremendous damage to Joanna’s right eye. In the third and fourth round, Joanna came back strong and used her leg kicks to her advantage. Rose took some to adjust but the leg kicks took a toll on her movement. The championship round was where she showed her full technical prowess taking Joanna in the deep waters. A take down in the last 30 secs gave her the edge in the scorecards. Joanna kept fighting until the final seconds but fell short.

Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Al Iaquinta via Unanimous Decision

UFC 223: Play by Play Updates & Live Results -

The eagle finally got what he has been behind since he joined the AKA in 2012. Though Al Iaquinta is far away from the same level at which Khabib fights, he still took Khabib to the full 5 rounds for the first time in his career. Al came in with his hands low ready to defend the takedowns but was unable to defend them. Khabib’s relentless pressure for the first three rounds and Al’s toughness kept the fight going. At one point, Al began pouring punches and got the attention of Khabib. The final round was where Khabib had enough and took Al to the ground with the intention of submitting him, but many attempts later Al was still defending and wading off the submissions.
