Israel Adesanya defeated Derek Brunson via TKO in Round 1
The Last Style Bender extended his win streak to 14-0 with a superior technical showdown against the biggest test of his UFC career. After his previous two fights going the distance and a not so flashy performance Adesanya vowed to come back with a stoppage. Many believed his ground game had holes and tonight it would be tested against Derek Brusnson, but Adesanya shut the critics just like he shut off the take down attempts. Derek kept coming for a single take take down, but ate a perfectly timed knee which was the beginning of the end. With just 9 seconds remaining in the first round, Adesanya dropped Derek twice with his strikes, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight.
Karl Roberson defeated Jack Marshman via Unanimous Decision
Climbing out of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, Robertson picked up his first win inside the octagon last year but he also tasted defeat for the first time. This was his chance to redeem himself and prove that he can stick around with the UFC caliber fighters. It didn’t take much effort from Robertson’s part to out struck Marshman. With crisp striking and perfectly times take downs, Robertson was able to dictate the fight the entire three rounds. Marshman’s head movement and footwork did little help to him as he ate strikes after strikes. It was nothing but a clean and dominant victory for Robertson.
Jared Cannonier defeated David Branch via TKO in Round 2
David Branch was clearly winning the fight, until he made that minute error and gave Jared the time to land the over hand right that sent him spiraling to the ground. Controlling the fight from the beginning with his speed and footwork, Branch out struck Jared as they contested for the first round. With two take downs in his books, Branch was slowly able to figure out how to handle the pressure of Jared. But things turned around with a single heavy punch right just seconds in the second round. With this win, Jared picks up his win after two straight losses.
Ronaldo Souza defeated Chris Weidman via TKO in Round 3
The co-main event was an all out stand up war between two of the best grappling experts in the middle weight division. Without a single take down attempt, both Jacare and Weidman engaged in a stand up fight. Jacare proved to be the better man with his slick head movement as Chris found it difficult to hit as the round progressed. With one round in his books, Chris appeared to have been taking it easy as he ate a lot of body shots in close range fighting. Jacare resurged in the final round and put pressure despite bleeding heavy from his nose. After suffering three straight losses, Chris picked up his first win over Kelvin, but with this loss gets back to the drawing board to figure out his next move.
Daniel Cormier defeated Derrick Lewis via Submission in Round 2
A quick work for Cormier who made it look easy in the stand up and with his take downs against Lewis. Cormier didn’t give Lewis any chance and quickly went in for the single leg take down where most of the first round was played out. Lewis did manage to land two jumping kicks, but were it from the black beast. With his skill and experience DC became the first man to ever defend a heavy weight title and light heavy weight title belts.
