After securing a record of 8-1 (1NC) since making his return to the lightweight division, Dustin Poirier will finally get his shot at Gold this weekend on UFC236. The American Top Team product will secure this shot after his amazing stoppage win over former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez back in July 2018. He will be locking horns against current UFC featherweight champion, Max Holloway for the interim lightweight championship. An interim title guarantees the title holder a title shot. So a win this weekend for “Diamond” could result in a future title shot against Khabib Nurgomedov.

Ahead of this fight, he took some time out to answer a few questions about Holloway and other things entering the fight.

When you last faced Max Holloway finished the fight in the very first round. How do you see this fight going? Does having a win over Holloway boost your confidence or is this Holloway way too different from the one you faced 7 years ago?

7 years ago and top of the UFC is a lifetime.  You grow, you make an adjustment, you evolve, or you don’t stay in the UFC for 7 years. Some guys wish they could have a career in the UFC for & plus years.  He (Holloway) has done that, at the top level and has become an undisputed world champion.  Holloway is now a completely different fighter.

You are finally getting your UFC title shot after 20 fights in the company. How would you describe this journey so far?

I’m honestly just really happy it is happening now. Sooner would have been too early.  I’m at a spot in my life in my skill set and just my understanding of this whole thing, fighting and life, this is perfect timing.

UFC 236 will be live in India on 14th April 2019 on SONY Ten 2 and SONY Ten 2 HD 7:30 AM onwards.
