Irene Aldana defeated Bethe Correia via Submission in Round 3

The main event of UFC 237 kicked off with a bantamweight clash between Mexico’s Aldana and Brazil’s Correia. Aldana’s four fights inside the octagon all went the distance and since her first two losses, she has raked up her ammo and improved her fight IQ which was evident in today’s scrap with Correia. Aldana used her height and reach advantage to keep Correia at distance and land some heavy shots. It took a while for Correia to open up in the first round and it looked like the two year long break had an effect on her performance. But the Brazilian came back strong in the second round and turned the fight into a scrappy affair. But an ill-advised take down attempt int he third round turned the fight around. Aldana not only stuffed the take down but also took her back instantly and transitioned into a belly down armbar. Correia had no choice but to tap at 3:24 secs of the third round. Correia hasn’t won since her 2016 win over Jessica Eye and has now lost two in a row. With this victory, Aldana now has three straight wins and gets her first submission inside the octagon.

In her post fight interview Aldana said “I’m more known for my boxing and my striking and I’m glad I could show my jiu-jitsu here … I’m glad I got the victory by armbar.”

Laureano Staropoli defeated Thiago Alves via Unanimous Decision

With just one fight in the UFC, new comer Laureano Staropoli faced a veteran in Thiago Alves, but his spectacular performance had him win the biggest fight of his career. Staropoli displayed some slick footwork and flashy kicks to keep Alves back peddling in the first round, but it was his deep gas tank that got him land endless combinations.  At times it seemed like Alves had his chance to finish Laureano but with the Argentinian’s tenacity it was hard for Alves. Laureano continued to move forward despite Alves landing numerous leg kicks and caught Alves clean with his strikes. With the win, Laureano is now on a seven fight win streak.

Alexander Volkanovski def. Jose Aldo via Unanimous Decision

Alexander Volkanovski stays true to his nick name ‘The Great’ by defeating the former feather weight champion and the #1 contender Jose Aldo. Volkanovski stuck to a smart game plan and made zero errors which led to him over shadowing Aldo on the feet. Volkanovski used his leg kicks to set the tone of the fight and then followed up with some nasty body shots in close range. He was also able to defend any chances of being taken down by Aldo and continued to land more shots than the Brazilian. Volkanovskiis now on a seventeen fight win streak and stays undefeated in the UFC with 7-0.

In his post fight interview Volkanovski  said “I’m next in line 100 percent, I’m the only one who is undefeated in the top three now. I should be number one.”

Jared Cannonier defeated Anderson Silva via TKO in Round 1

With the whole Brazilian crowd against him, Cannonier walked into the octagon confident of making a big statement. “The Killa Gorilla” deployed leg kicks to get Silva’s attention in the opening minutes of the round. Silva as usual took time to open up but in the process ate a lot of leg kicks and punches. As the fight was nearing the end of first round, Cannonier landed a hard inside leg kick that just buckled Silva’s right knee. Silva dropped immediately wincing in pain and there was no follow up punches required from Cannonier’s side.

In his post fight interview, Silva said “I’m sorry, guys in training, my knee was already a little bit bad, and I took a kick to it, and I just couldn’t hold up. I’m really sorry.”

“I really appreciate the opportunity to step in here. He didn’t have to fight me. He could’ve fought anybody he wanted to…so I want to show my appreciation and my respect for him. But the crowd is a different story. They don’t respect me, and I ain’t got not respect for them. That’s just it.” Cannonier said.

Jessica Andrade defeated Rose Namajunas in Round 2 via KO

The main event fight ended up with the #1 ranked Andrade knocking out Rose by slamming her to the canvas in the second round after being battered in the first round. Rose was all over Andrade in the first round and she lit the Brazilian with her jabs and crosses which quickly opened up the left eye. Andrade was persistent and tried to pick up and slam Rose but a kimura prevented the slam. Rose then continued to land strikes every other second and was way ahead in the score card. Andrade continued her game plan and this time when she picked up slammed Rose right on her head causing the champion to loose senses for a moment before being stopped by the referee.
